JoyceDeWitt first appeared on stage at the age of 13. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ball State University. The director encouraged her to apply for UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program. The program awarded her the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship, as well as the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt stated that she had never had a conversation with Abe Vigoda during her time at UCLA. DeWitt is well-known for her character Janet Wood during the 1977-1984 season of sitcom Three's Company, a job she obtained after being cast in the second pilot episode of the show. Janet also appeared in an episode of the show The Ropers in the year 1979. DeWitt was the last actor to appear in Three's Company's 1984 finale. She was then featured in an episode of Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. Then, she stopped acting for several years. The actress returned to acting in an appearance in an episode of Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse in June 1991. One of her roles was in the 1995 TV comedy film Spring Fling! A character based upon her, voiced by an actress, appeared in a 1997 episode of Pinky and the Brain. The actress was also featured in an episode Cybill. She's been on TV shows like Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special, and Call of the Wild in 2000.
