Before becoming an actress, she began her modeling career as a young model. She was nominated for the Theatre World Award for "one of most promising personalities 1956-2005" for her role in The Potting Shed. Lynley's film career got underway in 1958 with the Disney film The Light in the Forest. Holiday for Lovers (1959), Blue Denim (1959) followed. She was nominated in 1959 for the Golden Globe Award as Most Promising Female Newcomer Female. In the following year she was again nominated for the Golden Globe Award as Most Promising Female Newcomer.
